Portable communication systems

Portable communication systems

A basic communication system consists of a transmitter, receiver or both combined in a 'transceiver' and an antenna. In many instances, a portable communication system becomes desirable because it provides the individual with the facility to either transmit or receive information from a host of locations. There are many such portable communications systems. In several such systems, the antenna and the receiving and transmitting device are either very prominent or their presence can easily be made out from their packaging. Portable communication systems are used widely in military applications.

The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency - DARPA - is financing a project related to advanced telecommunications systems to be used in both military and civilian applications. The devices to be developed would be integrated with silicon microchips to bring out a new generation of high performance portable communication systems. The improvements resulting from this project are expected to lead to a range of mobile technologies that will have greater data communication rates.

Diamond is not only the hardest substance known but is also rigid and light. Hence, it can be used in making tuning fork gadgets that vibrate at frequencies - almost up to 100,000,000,000 times per second for tuning forks of around 100 nanometers in size - greater than comparable devices made from other materials. High frequencies such as these are useful in the main components used in cell phones, which enable them to perform at much greater frequencies. Manufacturing diamond tuning forks is a formidable challenge as they have to be reliable and affordable. Only then will it be possible to adopt them in broadband communications.

Portable communication systems use satellite facilities. Iridium Satellite Network is being harnessed by many service providers to offer real-time voice or data service to people everywhere, including in aircraft, at anytime. Communication systems such as SatMAX System, Globecomm Satellite Communications, TACPAK Satellite Telephone Communication System, AutoGenSat MicroLite, World Communication Center provide Iridium satellite-based communication facilities. They have the unique ability to support both indoor and outdoor communication. These solutions are ideal for places such as educational institutions and hospitals and also for people on the move, especially in remote locations, so that they have access to communication anytime and anywhere. They are of invaluable use in disaster recovery and emergency situations.
