Steer clear of traffic bottlenecks
Traffic snarls have become very common in every part of the world. With the number of vehicles increasing every year, it is becoming difficult for authorities to control the movement of vehicular traffic. Serpentine queues with hundreds of vehicles one behind the other are a common sight in a number of cities. Many solutions are being sought to regulate and provide for smooth flow of traffic. The latest solution for the beleaguered traffic is to be offered on mobile phones.
IntelliOne Technologies, Georgia, US, specialises in traffic information. The company developed software that calculates the roadway speeds by swiftly examining the mobile phone network usage. The application called 'Need4Speed' is to be tested in three major types of traffic conditions: freeways, highways and city streets. The technology transforms normal mobile phone network information into speed and travel time data on all the roadways that provide for cell phone coverage. The information is updated once in a second and has accuracy level of up to 3 mph.
This precision helps in guiding drivers properly in real-time around traffic jams. The company is confident that this innovative technology would enable access to live speed information about every road and help in saving time and fuel. Traffic jams lead to a lot of time and fuel being wasted. With live speed and travel information, the driver can choose the best route with least traffic to reach his destination.
IntelliOne created this patented 'Roadway Speed Measurement System' based on the concept that wireless gadgets in motion communicate regularly with multiple cell towers and generate reports used by wireless carriers to manage and make the best use of their networks. The IntelliOne application brings "as-it-happens traffic reporting," largely outperforming the present ways of gathering information including in-road detectors, cameras and helicopters.
This innovation is also expected to provide the required value to public safety agencies and trucking fleets. In case of an accident, the system enables easy evacuation by providing emergency vehicles through the quickest route out of an area. Apart from this, the system can identify people who need to be evacuated swiftly. In commercial vehicles, the system helps drivers find roads with traffic chaos so that they can circumvent them. This helps them in reaching their destination in time while saving valuable fuel. The company plans to license the 'Need4Speed' technology to third-party vendors who would make it available to the general public.
