Mobiles to give nightmares to criminals
These days, mobile phones have become one of the most commonly used gadgets. People from all walks of life have found mobile phones to be extremely useful in their day-to-day lives. Be it for software professionals, teachers, accountants, vegetable vendors or politicians - possessing a mobile phone is inevitable. It has come a long way from the days when it was seen in the hands of a select few, who could afford it. But, with advancements in technology combined with encouraging policies from governments, more and more people are able to afford mobile phones. At the same time, the range of functions that they can perform has increased manifold.
One such function for which the mobile phones are being increasingly used in the recent times is to solve crimes and nab criminals. Police also seem inclined to look for clues provided in the form of photos taken by mobile phones. Last year, a group of armed robbers used chainsaws and pickaxes to enter a sports shop in Manchester, UK. In all, eight masked robbers were reported to have participated in the crime and fled in three cars. Police from Greater Manchester area urged people who may have captured the footage of the crime on their mobiles to come forward and inform them.
In another incident, police in Merrimack, US, tracked a person whom they suspected to be involved in stealing cars and selling the spare parts. During the arrest, they found a mobile phone that had a picture of a Ferrari car in it. The 1995 Ferrari 355 was reported stolen a few months ago. It was priced between $75,000 and $100,000 and was recovered from a self-storage unit - a place where people can keep their valuables/belongings for an agreed period against payment. Police arrested the suspect and his accomplice.
In yet another instance, an incident of robbery has been reported from Newport City, UK. People who were standing close to the scene of the robbery clicked pictures using their camera phones. Some people took photographs of the registration numbers of the miscreants' vehicles also. These camera phone snaps provided crucial clues to the police, in addition to the CCTV footage. Using these clues, the police arrested the robbers and produced them in the court. The court convicted them for armed robbery and for firing at a guard. Considering the pace of advancement in communications technologies, mobile phones are very likely to be equipped with greater functionalities in future to assist the investigating agencies in solving crimes.
