‘3G Doctor’ to treat patients
3G is the short form for third-generation technology. It is one of the popular mobile phone standards. The services utilising 3G provide the ability to transmit both voice data such as calls and non-voice data such as instant messaging, email and video telephony at the same time. Japan was the first country to introduce 3G on a wide scale commercially. In 2005, almost 40 per cent of the subscribers in Japan used 3G services. On the technical front, 3G services are wide area cellular telephone networks unlike IEEE 802.11 networks, which are short range networks meant for Internet access. Now, 3G is being used to provide various services.
A new service called ‘3G Doctor’, to be introduced in the UK and Ireland, brings an opportunity for patients to consult qualified doctors registered with General Medical Council through ‘3G Video Calling’. The mobile content company offering this solution is in a position to make the best use of the opportunity to provide medical services through the advanced GSM mobile communications. Mobile applications have great potential to contribute substantially to improvement in healthcare. But, their actual contribution has been scanty, in spite of the fact that great penetration of mobile phones made the situation good enough to consider mobile phone as the interface with the public.
It is expected that ‘3G Doctor’ service will become the economical means of access to the service of independent private doctors. Patients will be asked to make payment using a popular method to make charging simple and payment easy. The service requires the patients to fill a multiple choice question and answer patient history in a form available on the Internet, through their mobile phone or any Internet connection before the video consultation. Developed over 20 years at Mayo Clinic, this interactive interview software ensures the smooth and automatic processing of an efficient remote consultation procedure.
‘3G Doctor’ was recently shown on a BBC Newsnight programme celebrating the 15th anniversary of GSM telecommunications. The service will be launched formally at the TeleMed and eHealth Forum at the Royal Society of Medicine on November 20, 2006. Those who are interested in obtaining more information about this service may email their names and contact details to enquiries@3gdoctor.com. This service is at present recruiting experienced doctors in the UK and Ireland. ‘3G Doctor’ is expected to empower patients and help them meet their healthcare requirements.
